W is built on the open AT-Protocol, a global standard for interoperable social networking. This allows your posts and content to work across apps, rather than being locked into a single platform.

Anyone aged 18 or over can join. You need to verify your identity to start posting and commenting. Organisations and companies are also welcome with a dedicated organisational account.

W is built on the AT Protocol, an open-source framework for interoperable social media. This allows compatible applications and services to communicate across a shared network and gives users greater freedom to choose where and how they participate. Like other services built on the AT Protocol, W consists of several different components. Some are based on open-source software, some are developed specifically for W, and some are licensed from third-party technology providers. W itself is not currently a fully open-source application, and technology developed specifically for W will not automatically be published as open source. During W’s early development, the repositories we forked were publicly accessible and were later made private while we reviewed security, privacy, licensing, intellectual-property, documentation and commercial considerations. W will republish the forked repositories, with improvements, integrations, bug fixes and technical documentation when they have been properly reviewed and are ready for responsible release. W will comply fully with all applicable open-source licences. Our commitment is to support open standards, interoperability and meaningful user choice, contribute responsibly to the AT Protocol ecosystem, and continue building a secure, sustainable and distinctive service.

The AT Protocol is designed to support account portability, and W has no intention of locking users into its service. During the public beta, migration is not yet available through a self-service portal. Migration may require technical assistance, and the exact process will depend on the service from which the account is moving and the service receiving it. Identity, public content and social connections may be portable, but application-specific functionality, settings, moderation preferences and certain other information may not transfer between services. Our goal is to make leaving W as straightforward as joining it. Please contact our support team for information about currently available migration options.

W operates European owned infrastructure for key parts of its service, including Personal Data Server (PDS) infrastructure, moderation services and other platform components. W is also developing and operating its own AppView infrastructure. During the public beta, however, some user experiences and services may continue to rely on shared or third-party AT Protocol infrastructure, including components originally developed by Bluesky. We are continuing to strengthen W’s own infrastructure and will provide more technical information as the architecture develops. Specific hosting and data-processing arrangements are described in W’s privacy information and should be understood in relation to the particular service involved.

W and Bluesky are independent services built on the same open AT Protocol network. This creates opportunities for interoperability while allowing each service to develop its own features, policies, infrastructure and user experience. W is specifically focused on verified-human participation, reducing fake accounts and automated manipulation, European digital governance, and tools that help people understand what is happening beyond their existing social bubble. W is also developing its own product functionality, including discovery, trends, identity and trust features. Some of this technology is specific to W and will remain proprietary. Users who prefer another compatible AT Protocol service should remain free to choose it. We believe that open networks become stronger when users have meaningful alternatives rather than being locked into a single application.
